Filed Under 2008 Election, News Items | Leave a Comment
Vern McKinley is mentioned in a Washington Post article about the primaries in Virginia on Tuesday.
For the first time since 1980, Wolf also is facing a challenge from within the GOP, from financial consultant Vern P. McKinley. McKinley said his experience working for U.S. and foreign governments and free-market think tanks qualifies him for office. He has accused Wolf of being a “big-government Republican” who has abandoned his conservative roots during his long time in office.

Loudoun Easterner: 10th District, Meet The Candidates
Filed Under 2008 Election, Media, News Items, big government | Leave a Comment
The Loudoun Easterner published an article outlining the positions of the candidates competing in Virginia’s 10th congressional district race. The primary is next Tuesday, June 10th. The Vern McKinley section certainly makes a strong case for his truly limited government candidacy.
During the 1980’s and ‘90’s McKinley worked for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the Resolution Trust Corporation and the Treasury Department’s Office of Thrift Supervision, and attended the law school at George Washington University. He also conducted policy analysis for the CATO Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. During the past eight years, he has worked as a legal and policy advisor on financial and fiscal matters to governmental entities in the United States and several foreign countries including China, Nigeria, the Philippines, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kenya, Libya, Serbia, Kosovo and Tajikistan according to his campaign press secretary Michael Parrish.
His main issue thus far in his campaign has involved government spending and “earmarks,” a practice he would like to see “vanish.” He seeks to reduce government spending “dramatically.”
McKinley reportedly is “angry” with Wolf and other Republicans whom he views as having “stayed away from Republican principles of small government.” In addition he is a defender of Second Amendment rights to bear arms and has earned a 100 percent rating from the Virginia Gun Owners Coalition. For more information on McKinley, visit his campaign website at www.mckinleyforcongress.com.
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE VERN ON JUNE 10th (Next Tuesday).

Frank Wolf Dodges The Debate
Filed Under 2008 Election, Debate, Frank Wolf, Media, News Items | Leave a Comment
In a local newspaper, The McLean Connection, a Frank Wolf representative reveals that he will not participate in any debates prior to the Republican Primary against Vern McKinley on June 10th.
Though they have made some side-by-side appearances, U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10) and his Republican opponent Vern McKinley are unlikely to debate before their party primary June 10. “He is not doing any debates,” wrote Dan Scandling, a member of Wolf’s congressional staff, in an email.
McKinley said there have been four efforts to get the congressman to debate his Republican opponent — including invitations from Loudoun County high school students and the Politics Hour with Kojo Nnamdi on 88.5 FM, the public radio station.
Loudoun County’s Northern Virginia Community College campus and Sterling Foundation, Inc. also invited Wolf to partake in a debate similar to the one held between the Democratic primary candidates last week. Participation would have required Wolf to meet with some of the college’s political science students for a pre-debate interview earlier in the spring.
“The congressman wouldn’t agree to debate. … I don’t know why he wouldn’t. Maybe he doesn’t have time,” said Rosemarie Pelletier, the political science professor who extended the invitation to Wolf.

CentreView: Vern McKinley And Opponents Discuss Rising Oil Prices
Filed Under 2008 Election, Energy Policy, News Items | Leave a Comment
Vern McKinley and his Democratic and Republican opponents in Virginia’s 10th district congressional race weigh in on energy policy and rising oil prices in a local newspaper article yesterday.
McKinley said the U.S. government should not try to control the price of oil. The development of alternative energy sources should also be left up to the world financial market and not subsidized by the federal government.“[Corn] ethanol is a complete distortion of markets and reality,” said McKinley.
The Republican supports opening up restricted territories in the United States, such as those in Alaska, for oil exploration and drilling. He wants to reassess the use of the federal gas tax and said that all responsibility for transportation — and possibly the taxing authority that supports those projects — should ultimately be shifted to the local government.
“I don’t think we get our money’s worth for all the [federal] transportation money we spend,” he said.

Vern McKinley Asserts His Conservatism In Interview At Miller Politics Blog
Filed Under 2008 Election, Earmarks, Economics, Frank Wolf, News Items, Republicans, big government | Leave a Comment
Vern McKinley was interviewed by Lee “Ben” Miller for the Miller Politics blog yesterday.
MP: “Why did you decide to challenge incumbent Frank Wolf for the Republican nomination?”
McKinley: “I observed the 2006 election and saw a ‘Big Government Republican’ and a ‘Big Government Democrat’ offered by the two major parties. There was an ‘urban legend’ in the District that Congressman Wolf was a good limited government, fiscal conservative and he perpetuated this myth. I took a Vote-Smart survey that showed I agreed with him only about 25 to 30% of the time. This led me to research his record further and everything I found out about him as well as his votes subsequent to my initial research has shown that my decision to challenge him was a good one.”

Washington Post on The Reason Magazine Debate Today
Filed Under 2008 Election, Debate, News Items, Republicans | Leave a Comment
The Washington Post had a blurb promoting today’s Reason Magazine Debate with Vern McKinley, Bob Barr, Mike Gravel, and Wayne Allyn Root.
“This is the wildest Libertarian [race] in a long time,” says Reason associate editor David Weigel, who organized and will moderate the debate. “They’ve never had two [former] elected officials leave their parties and run Libertarian.”
The first one is, of course, Barr. The second is Mike Gravel, a former Democratic presidential contender and former senator from Alaska. Gravel, disillusioned with the Democrats after standing on their stage for this cycle’s early debates, joined the LP in March.
Joining Barr and Gravel will be Wayne Allyn Root, a former Republican, and Vern McKinley, a “Ron Paul Republican” who is challenging Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.).

Unfairness At Virginia’s 10th District Convention?
Filed Under 2008 Election, Frank Wolf, News Items, Republicans | Leave a Comment
The great blog NOVA Townhall published an article about the 10th District Republican Convention. They emphasize a bit of the difficulty for non-incumbents to gain universal support among the GOP faithful by showing the posted signs on the doors to the convention saying that campaign signs were prohibited. They then show above the stage in the Convention hall a huge Frank Wolf sign.

NV Daily Covers The June 10th Primaries
Filed Under 2008 Election, Frank Wolf, News Items, Republicans | Leave a Comment
Northern Virginia Daily highlighted Vern’s opposition to Frank Wolf in the upcoming June 10th primary.
But Wolf has “gone native” during his time in Washington, according to Vern McKinley, the man aiming to unseat the 28-year incumbent in the GOP primary.
McKinley faults Wolf for votes on “earmarks,” also known as directed spending, as well as other votes that the challenger says represent an unwarranted expansion of the role of the federal government.
The incumbent was wrong to support things like the No Child Left Behind education act, the Medicare prescription drug benefit for senior citizens and a prohibition on Internet gambling using credit cards, McKinley said.
