Vern McKinley appeared on Fairfax Public Access TV yesterday on a show called “The Road To” with Jim Flynn. The video embedded below is about an hour long. Note: Judy Feder also appears.

Vern McKinley is the first Republican candidate in Virginia to make his Project Vote Smart Political Courage Test answers publicly available. If you had or have any questions about where Vern stands on a particular issue this is a great place to start your research. It includes his views on abortion, capital punishment, taxes, spending, regulation, gun rights, and more. Two general themes can be discerned from his answers: Follow the Constitution and limit the size and scope of the federal government.

The Loudoun Easterner published an article outlining the positions of the candidates competing in Virginia’s 10th congressional district race. The primary is next Tuesday, June 10th. The Vern McKinley section certainly makes a strong case for his truly limited government candidacy.

During the 1980’s and ‘90’s McKinley worked for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the Resolution Trust Corporation and the Treasury Department’s Office of Thrift Supervision, and attended the law school at George Washington University. He also conducted policy analysis for the CATO Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. During the past eight years, he has worked as a legal and policy advisor on financial and fiscal matters to governmental entities in the United States and several foreign countries including China, Nigeria, the Philippines, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kenya, Libya, Serbia, Kosovo and Tajikistan according to his campaign press secretary Michael Parrish.

His main issue thus far in his campaign has involved government spending and “earmarks,” a practice he would like to see “vanish.” He seeks to reduce government spending “dramatically.”
McKinley reportedly is “angry” with Wolf and other Republicans whom he views as having “stayed away from Republican principles of small government.” In addition he is a defender of Second Amendment rights to bear arms and has earned a 100 percent rating from the Virginia Gun Owners Coalition.

This week the Washington Times published an article discussing Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor’s fear that Republicans may be giving in to the Democrats a bit too much of late.

A top House Republican yesterday said the leadership must steer disheartened rank-and-file members from adopting a centrist or “Pelosi-lite” agenda and instead reaffirm conservative principles, or risk deepening the political grave the party dug for itself under President Bush.

“The job of the conference right now is to not allow us to slip into [saying] we’re going to just be like them. We’re going to go and just be Pelosi-lite and go with their solutions and try and slip by this election,” said Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the Republican chief deputy whip.

Vern McKinley received a nice mention within an article on the Nolan Chart from author, “Jake, the Champion of the Constitution”.

I continue to search for other candidates that will not go to war so carelessly, and I am pleased to report I found another. Vern McKinley is running for the House in the 10th congressional district of Virginia. I wrote Vern an email (info@mckinleyforcongress.com) inquiring as to his stance on wars before sending a donation, with two caveats that I was only considering a piddly donation, and that I didn’t even live in Virginia.

His name is Vern McKinley, and he did something very strange. He wrote me back. (Background - this is from a California resident who has written his Representative and Senators over 60 times, sometimes from a personal email and sometimes using www.downsizedc.org, sometimes reasonably and sometimes frantically. I am still waiting for my first reply, its like writing to a wall)

The Great Falls Connection reported on Virginia’s 10th Congressional District candidate fund raising last week.

U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10) and Democratic challenger Judy Feder raised nearly the same amount of money and significantly more than their primary opponents during the first three months of 2008.

Wolf has $715,358 headed into a primary against Ashburn Republican Vern McKinley, who has raised $18,325 overall. Feder has $700,046 to face Air Force veteran Mike Turner, who has raised $82,193 overall, in the Democratic primary.

Both contests take place June 10 and will determine the major political party candidates for Virginia’s 10th

Congressional District seat. Independent candidate Neeraj Nigam, who has raised $150, is also running in the general election.

Candidates emphasized fund raising to different degrees depending on their own success.

McKinley said he wasn’t surprised by the relatively small amount of money he raised, especially since he is challenging an incumbent in a primary.

“That is the result of running against a 28-year incumbent. It is going to be a challenge. I looked at Congressman Wolf’s records and he only raised $10,000 to $15,000 during his first campaign,” said McKinley, who expects to collect about $50,000 overall.
