The Loudoun Easterner published an article outlining the positions of the candidates competing in Virginia’s 10th congressional district race. The primary is next Tuesday, June 10th. The Vern McKinley section certainly makes a strong case for his truly limited government candidacy.

During the 1980’s and ‘90’s McKinley worked for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the Resolution Trust Corporation and the Treasury Department’s Office of Thrift Supervision, and attended the law school at George Washington University. He also conducted policy analysis for the CATO Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. During the past eight years, he has worked as a legal and policy advisor on financial and fiscal matters to governmental entities in the United States and several foreign countries including China, Nigeria, the Philippines, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Kenya, Libya, Serbia, Kosovo and Tajikistan according to his campaign press secretary Michael Parrish.

His main issue thus far in his campaign has involved government spending and “earmarks,” a practice he would like to see “vanish.” He seeks to reduce government spending “dramatically.”
McKinley reportedly is “angry” with Wolf and other Republicans whom he views as having “stayed away from Republican principles of small government.” In addition he is a defender of Second Amendment rights to bear arms and has earned a 100 percent rating from the Virginia Gun Owners Coalition.

Vern McKinley Debates Others Because Frank Wolf Won’t

Ashburn, VA – Reason Magazine held a debate on Libertarian and Republican principles on May 20th. In attendance were Vern McKinley, Mike Gravel, Bob Barr, and Wayne Allen Root. Each of them answered a variety of questions from Reason Magazine’s reporter David Weigel and took questions from the audience.

McKinley talked about immigration, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, limiting the role of government, and drug policies. He said that he would have voted for a more targeted attack of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, but would oppose any type of nation building. As for Iraq, he would have voted “no” to go in.

Each of the candidates got to express their opinion on getting rid of a department and Vern chose Commerce, Energy, and Education. He said that Republicans talked about it in the 80s and 90s, but “this time around, we need to get serious and get rid of them all,” McKinley stated.

On the topic of drug prohibition, McKinley stated that the Constitution leaves that issue up to the states.

McKinley is a financial expert who advises foreign countries, has worked for the FDIC, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, and has done policy analysis for the Cato Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. He is running for the Republican nomination in the 10th District of Virginia for the House of Representatives. The primary is scheduled to be held on June 10, 2008.

Vern McKinley was interviewed by Lee “Ben” Miller for the Miller Politics blog yesterday.

MP: “Why did you decide to challenge incumbent Frank Wolf for the Republican nomination?”

McKinley: “I observed the 2006 election and saw a ‘Big Government Republican’ and a ‘Big Government Democrat’ offered by the two major parties. There was an ‘urban legend’ in the District that Congressman Wolf was a good limited government, fiscal conservative and he perpetuated this myth. I took a Vote-Smart survey that showed I agreed with him only about 25 to 30% of the time. This led me to research his record further and everything I found out about him as well as his votes subsequent to my initial research has shown that my decision to challenge him was a good one.”

This week the Washington Times published an article discussing Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor’s fear that Republicans may be giving in to the Democrats a bit too much of late.

A top House Republican yesterday said the leadership must steer disheartened rank-and-file members from adopting a centrist or “Pelosi-lite” agenda and instead reaffirm conservative principles, or risk deepening the political grave the party dug for itself under President Bush.

“The job of the conference right now is to not allow us to slip into [saying] we’re going to just be like them. We’re going to go and just be Pelosi-lite and go with their solutions and try and slip by this election,” said Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the Republican chief deputy whip.

The Liberty Maven blog has posted an article critical of Frank Wolf’s conservatism. It even charges him with potential corruption. DISCLOSURE: Liberty Maven has endorsed Vern McKinley For Congress.

Frank Wolf loves introducing legislation that creates more government bureaucracy just so it looks like he’s doing something. Frank Wolf has continually requested earmarks for the 10th District over the years. This year, the very year he is supposedly now against earmarks, he requested over $250 million in earmarks. This is by far the highest amount among Virginia Republicans who have released their requests.

He talks like a limited government Republican but acts like a spendthrift Democrat.

An editorial in the Wall Street Journal today by Pat Toomey, President of The Club For Growth sums up the state of the GOP very well.

Republicans would be better off, the argument goes, if the Club PAC spent its money targeting Democrats instead of liberal Republicans. This is the argument of politicians who care more about maintaining power than using that power to implement conservative policies.

Thus comes the demand for an uncompromising obeisance to the bottom line: Elect as many Republicans as possible, regardless of how they will vote once in office.

It is for this reason that challenges to incumbents are deemed sacrilegious, no matter how far the incumbent has strayed from conservative principles. And it is for this reason that party leaders defend some of the most liberal incumbents, also known as RINOs (Republicans in Name Only), and assail the Club PAC for helping to elect true conservatives.

An article in the Loudoun Times discusses Vern McKinley’s challenge to Frank Wolf in Virginia’s 10th District.

McKinley is firmly against the federal government contributing money to the Metrorail extension out to Loudoun. The main reason, he said, is that voters need to get away from thinking of members of Congress as “ATM machines and Santa Clause.”

“Your oath as a congressman,” he said, “is not to get as much money for your district as possible.”

Vern McKinley was mentioned in the Winchester Star yesterday. The article mentioned the successful effort to get on the ballot in opposition to Frank Wolf.

Through McKinley’s Web site, www.mckinleyforcongress.com, the candidate has informed voters that he has met the threshold that requires 1,000 signatures of qualified voters in the 10th Congressional District to get on the primary ballot.

According to the McKinley campaign, the general registrar for Loudoun County certified that he had met that requirement.

Also interesting, the article describes yet another Frank Wolf ‘yes’ vote to take money out of tax payers pockets for the greater good.

The blogger at apocryph.org has taken positive notice of Vern McKinley’s campaign and has some harsh criticism of Frank Wolf.

A while back I mentioned Vern McKinley’s 10th district congressional bid. He’s gathered enough signatures to make it on the ballot for the Republican primary, and is gearing up to fight the Feckless Wonder, congressman Frank Wolf, with whom I am not amused.

If you would like to see Frank Wolf turned out and replaced with a small-government, go-to-hell-I’m-keeping-my-guns Republican, contribute to Vern McKinley for Congress. I just did. Even Dick Heller of Heller vs. DC fame is supporting him.

Also, check out his earlier posts criticizing Wolf:

The first article above articulates one of the very reasons Vern McKinley is running against Wolf: Wolf’s support of wasteful government programs. Vern understands the necessity for true conservative limited government, especially at a time when the economy is suffering as it is today.
