147 Republicans Sign Spending Veto Pledge, Wolf Not On Of Them

ASHBURN, VA–Republicans in the House are starting to get back in the groove on challenging out of control government spending.  After losing their identity as the party of fiscal responsibility over the past half dozen years when they were the majority, House Republicans are now trying to improve their fiscal image.  147 Republican House Members have signed a veto spending pledge and sent it to President Bush, but Congressman Frank Wolf is not one of the signers.

The pledge is simple: If the President vetoes a fiscal year 2008 appropriations bill because it exceeds his request, the 147 members commit to sustaining that veto. The 147 House GOP Members would be sufficient to prevent a two-thirds override attempt in the House. The list of Members signing the pledge includes House Minority Leader John Boehner, Ranking Republican Member of the Appropriations Committee Jerry Lewis and presidential aspirants Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo. One Republican Congressman conspicuously absent from the list of 147 GOP members is Congressman Frank Wolf, a senior Republican member of the Appropriations Committee. This does not surprise Congressman Wolf’s 2008 GOP challenger in the 10th District of Virginia, Vern McKinley:  “Congressman Wolf has gone from being a solid vote for fiscal restraint to being a defender of big spending. This commitment by the 147 Members is an important, initial step in getting spending under control and unfortunately Congressman Wolf was not up to the commitment.”
